As a member of McGrath North’s business corporate practice group, Stacey focuses her practice on mergers and acquisitions, data privacy and cybersecurity matters and complex commercial business transactions. Stacey’s goal is to establish a partnership with each client to create a practical working plan that allows her clients to reach their goals without creating barriers to their success.


Practical and Tailored Guidance Through Every Stage of a Transaction

Stacey has experience assisting a wide-variety of clients through every stage of a M&A transaction. Her experience ranges from helping start-ups take-off to working through a buy/sell transaction with individual entrepreneurs, mid-sized midwestern companies and Fortune 500 businesses. Stacey is skilled at maximizing efficiencies with her modern and practical legal guidance always ensuring her clients are prepared and informed through every step of the process. Stacey takes time upfront to help her clients evaluate their goals in order to best navigate through each stage of the transaction process. Stacey assists clients with performing due diligence and evaluating the clients’ needs at the early transaction stage to negotiating and drafting transaction documents to preparing each client for a smooth post-close transition. The clients’ ultimate goal is Stacey’s priority and she structures her guidance to accomplish these goals.

Seamless Legal Counsel

Stacey regularly helps clients address current and emerging data privacy and cybersecurity matters, including preparing, advising and implementing privacy programs to maximize compliance with the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), EU’s General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), the Federal Trade Commission Act, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA), the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) and the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act (CAN-SPAM), among others. Stacey has a unique ability to work with clients to balance the importance of regulatory compliance with the practicalities of operationalizing a privacy program. Stacey regularly assists clients with review and negotiation of complex information technology agreements. Whether a client requires assistance evaluating a new technology service provider or assessing long-standing technology relationships, Stacey understands what’s market in today’s technology world and is prepared to provide value-added guidance as her clients negotiate with providers to achieve their objectives. Stacey partners with her clients to evaluate the application of the ever-changing data privacy and cybersecurity world to provide seamless legal counsel and to proactively create an efficient plan to navigate and comply with legal and regulatory obligations.

Stacey has extensive experience assisting clients with all aspects of commercial business transactions for companies of all sizes in a full spectrum of industries. Implementing sound contracts and administrative procedures to minimize legal risk is a key component for any business. Stacey provides sensible and realistic advice to ensure her clients are building operational efficiencies while protecting her clients’ best interests when negotiating, drafting and managing contract matters. Being proactive prevents costly liability down the road.

US Privacy Legislation: Which States Are Still Likely To Enact Comprehensive Laws In 2023?

2023 has already become a landmark year for data privacy developments. On January 1 of this year, the California Privacy Rights Act and the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act entered into force. Additionally, the Human Resources (HR) and Business-to-Business (B2B) exemptions under California law expired on January 1, which has drastically shifted businesses’ obligations in the state. Other states have also gotten in on the action, with Iowa passing a comprehensive privacy law, set to go into effect in 2025. Before that, however, the Colorado Privacy Act, the Connecticut Data Privacy Act, and the Utah Consumer Privacy Act will all enter into force before the end of this calendar year.

Iowa Becomes The Latest: Comprehensive Privacy Bill Signed Into Law

On March 28, 2023, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed the sixth state comprehensive privacy statute into law. Iowa now joins California, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah and Colorado in the group of ever-expanding states that have enacted such laws. Iowa’s law is similar to both the California Privacy Rights Act (“CPRA”) and the Utah Consumer Privacy Act (“UCPA”), although CPRA continues to have a broader reach than that of Iowa’s new law.
